Saturday 1 – Hand Sewing Skills & Garment Repairs
(Hem stitching and button sewing).

First of a three-class series.
Project: Hand Stitch Sampler
Materials Needed: 2-hole flat button, 4-hole flat button, shank button, scrap fabric or fat quarters
Tools Needed: Scissors, thimble, hand sewing needles, thread
Focus: Building independence, precision, and confidence with hand stitching
Learning Goals
- Understand when and why hand sewing is used in garments
- Practice neat, durable hand stitches
- Learn basic clothing repair skills
Skills Covered
- Threading a hand needle & knotting thread
- Running stitch
- Slip stitch / blind hem stitch
- Sewing on flat & shank buttons
- Simple hemming by hand
Hands-On Activities
- Stitch sampler on fabric squares
- Hem a small piece of fabric (or doll-sized garment)
- Sew buttons onto a practice panel
Take-Home Outcome
- Hand-stitch sampler
- Confidence fixing hems and buttons independently

| Instructor Bio: | Meet Colleen, our new Beginning Sewing teacher! A former film industry costumer with a lifelong love affair with thread and fabric, Colleen learned to sew and crochet from her Granny Bird and mom at a young age. A proud fabric hoarder(because you never know when you'll need that perfect print). Colleen delights in helping others stitch, snip and seam their way into new skills ands creative adventures. |
